Welcome Gwendolyn Rickard Bolger (Mrs. Ray Bolger)

"How lonely it is going to be now on The Yellow Brick Road." --Ray Bolger

Good Mourning Widows. Joy to you and me. And Happy Holidays, too!

Today we honor famous widow Gwendolyn Rickard Bolger wife of famous actor/dancer and star of The Wizard of Oz Ray Bolger.

Gwendolyn was a member of the club nobody wants to join 10 years. She died in 1997.

Known as Gwendolyn Rickard, she was an aspiring song writer when she met and fell in love with Ray Bolger. She recognized immediately that he would be famous and sacrificed her own career to shape Ray's. They were married 57 years.

Upon her death, Gwendolyn left a $2.5 million gift to UCLA establishing a musical theatre trust in her's and Ray's names.

After we remember Him, finger hug your pen.

Write something.

Go ahead.

I dare you.

Mourning Joy:

Q: How do you stop a charging elephant?

A: Take away his credit cards.

Have a joy-filled day Widows. And remember, we're not alone.

  1. Hello Linda,

A beautiful post about Gwendolyn Rickard Bolger. I have a great connection with Ray Bolger especially, so was very intrigued by your blog here about his dear wife, who as you say had 10 years of living without him. It is interesting that both of the departed celibrity dancers that I am interested in have both left a widow/partner behind and both eventually chose to be buried in the the same grave as their husband/partner. The other dancer I am reffering to is that great dancer Gregory Hines, and his fiancee Negrita Jayde, who had 6 years before joining her love.

If you look closely there was similarity in the styles of dance of these two, Ok so Gregory was a black man and predominately did tap dancing, but Ray was not adverse to some tap dancing too. Plus they both starred in a variety of films throughout their careers. True Gregory had a family and 2 previous wives, but his relationship with Negrita was definitely a deep love connection.

    Intresting stuff , thanks Francois
