Good Mourning Widows. Joy to you and me.
Today we honor and welcome famous widow, Agnes Carvel, wife of famous entrepreneur, father of franchise, Thomas "Tom" Carvel, into our joy-ous club.
In 1934, Tom Carvel was driving his ice cream truck through the town of Hartsdale, New York when he got a flat tire. It was Memorial Day and his truck was loaded with ice cream. He pulled into an empty parking lot and began selling melting ice cream to passing motorists on vacation. Selling all his ice cream, Tom Carvel quickly realized the profitability in selling ice cream from one location. The rest is history.
Tom died in 1990 at age 84. Agnes died in 1998 at age 89.
After the death of her husband, Agnes continued the foundation they had founded, the Thomas & Agnes Carvel Foundation, and is responsible for awarding grants for activities related to children.
